Forsyth County Commission Approves Definitive Documents for The Gathering at South Forsyth

This approval paves the way for the return of NHL hockey to Georgia pending a league expansion

Forsyth County, GA — June 11, 2025 – In a major milestone for Forsyth County and the future of professional sports in Georgia, the Forsyth County Commission tonight voted to approve the definitive documents for The Gathering at South Forsyth, a transformational $3+ billion mixed-use development that is anchored by an NHL-ready arena.

“This vote marks a catalytic step forward in bringing this visionary project to life,” said Vernon Krause, developer of The Gathering at South Forsyth. “Our team is more energized than ever as we prepare to meet with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to discuss possible expansion. We own the land in a robust and growing market with a development that will include an NHL-caliber arena ready to be built.”

The Gathering is expected to generate significant economic impact and provide long-term community benefits through job creation and infrastructure improvements, including the creation of a new entertainment hub in north Georgia which will encourage tourism. With the Commission’s approval of the definitive agreements, the project has a clear path to move into its next phase.

“This is a monumental period for Forsyth County and passionate hockey fans in the area. The dream of an NHL team in the region is one step closer to being realized,” said Forsyth County Commission Chairman Alfred John. “The Gathering will not only be a world-class destination for sports and entertainment, but it also positions our county as a national leader in smart, forward-thinking development. We are proud to support this project and all that it will bring to our community.”

The development will feature a mix of commercial, retail, hospitality, residential and entertainment venues on 100 acres, centered around a state-of-the-art arena capable of hosting NHL games and other major events from concerts to family-friendly acts to national conferences.

Forsyth County Manager David McKee added, “This project represents years of planning, collaboration and vision. The County is excited to take this next step, and we look forward to continuing our work with the development team to ensure The Gathering becomes a model for regional growth and innovation.”

As plans progress, the project team will continue to work closely with local, state and league stakeholders with the goal of bringing NHL hockey back to Georgia.

“We’re closer than we’ve ever been to bringing NHL hockey back to our region, and we believe we are closer to realizing that dream. Thank you to everyone who has believed in our vision—hockey belongs in Georgia,” Krause concluded.
